These Cards Help You Feel Brave When Someone You Love Is Having Surgery

Helping Kids Support Loved Ones Through Surgery: Creative Get-Well Card Ideas

A Message From Dr. Kelly Bridges and Her Daughter

Hi everyone. I’m Dr. Kelly Bridges, a board-certified neurosurgeon, and this is my 10-year-old daughter, Taylor.

When someone you love needs surgery, it can feel overwhelming, especially for kids. My daughter, Taylor, came up with a very thoughtful idea to help guide children through this experience. I have since created two videos, one for parents and one just for kids, offering tips on how to prepare when a loved one is having surgery.

Along the way, Taylor also helped by putting together some ideas in a series of get well cards. Simple, heartfelt creations that kids can make to bring comfort and smiles during a difficult time. So, in this video, we’re excited to share some ideas that hopefully inspire others to spread a little kindness when it’s needed most. So, let’s take a look.

Card Idea: The “Bravery Badge”

This one is called Bravery Badge. It’s for someone super strong like your mom, dad, or grandpa. You can add words like fearless or you’ve got this to remind them how tough they are.

Card Idea: A “Rainbow of Hugs”

Next is rainbow of hugs. Each color stands for something. Hugs, smiles, sunshine, healing, love, and rest.

Card Idea: The Teddy Bear Nurse

This one is a teddy bear nurse. A little bear with a big heart. You can even add a thoughtful saying and a tiny bandage sticker.

Card Idea: The Handprint Hug

Here’s the handprint hug. It’s super simple. Trace your hand and write, “Sending you a handful of hugs.”

Card Idea: The Garden of Love

And lastly is the garden of love. Each flower has a message. Hope, love, rest, joy, you name it.

Now, if you choose to make this a card like we did on this one, can you show us the inside of this one, please, sweetheart?

Sure.

You can write a little note about it on the inside, something about what you’d like to do together when they’re feeling better. For example, Taylor wrote, “Dear mom, I know you’re going to feel so much better soon. When you do, let’s celebrate with ice cream.”

A Final Note of Encouragement

If someone you love is going through surgery, remember a little creativity and a lot of heart can make a big difference.

Thank you for watching.
