What Real Patients Want You to Know About Lumbar Fusion Recovery

When patients ask me about lumbar fusion recovery, I believe there is tremendous value in hearing directly from people who have experienced it themselves. In this patient story, you’ll hear honest answers from someone who has lived through the journey and shares what they wish they had known before spine surgery.

Hearing From Real Patients About Spinal Fusion

Ever wonder what spine surgery really feels like and what to expect afterwards? Not from the textbooks, not from your surgeon, but from the people who’ve lived it.

I’m Dr. Kelly Bridges, board certified neurosurgeon, patient advocate, and a firm believer that every scar has a story. In this series, I ask my own patients the questions you want answered. Today, we’re going to discuss lumbar fusion.

Now, let’s get into the questions people want to know.

Do You Have Any Regrets or Things You Wish You Knew Before Surgery?

So, things I’ve learned since before my actual surgery and following my surgery and my recovery.

Number one, I strongly suggest if you think you have an issue, it doesn’t hurt to go have it checked out.

I tried to do a lot of Google doctoring and that’s not always the best.

Do You Have Any Tips for Patients Who Are Scared or Unsure About Surgery?

Take your time, shop around, ask questions.

I read some books that had me so afraid of back surgery. My answer was no, no, no. But, uh, if you really get down to the real world and talk to these surgeons, these neurosurgeons, and do your own research, you’ll probably find out that you can make a connection that way. I had a great one.

Do You Feel the Hardware Inside You Afterward?

I am happy. I don’t feel the hardware on my back. It never bothers me. I’m just doing great.
